Farms and Fathers

Together, we reminisced …

We had an enjoyable conversation about Farms and Fathers, two themes CommunityCare of Lyme will be lifting up during the month of June. We spoke about the good old days of gardening, canning, baking homemade bread, and storing our own vegetables.

We appreciated our fathers for the gifts of time, love, attention, providing, flowers, and more they gave to
us.

Silent, Strong Dad
by Karen K. Boyer

He never looks for praises.
He’s never one to boast.
He just goes on quietly working
For those he loves the most.
His dreams are seldom spoken.
His wants are very few,
And most of the time his worries
Will go unspoken, too.
He’s there…a firm foundation
Through all our storms of life,
A sturdy hand to hold onto
In times of stress and strife.
A true friend we can turn to
When times are good or bad.
One of our greatest blessings,
The man that we call Dad.

We appreciated the farmers and farms.

We remembered the time before highways when everything was slower paced. You saw more beauty on these travels. Children played in their yards. Families did more together at home and in the yard. People cooked, sewed, canned, knit, played games, worked with tools, built the house, gardened, sat, raised irises, and visited together. Every Sunday was a family day.

We appreciated Native Americans for giving us corn, squash, beans, and so much wisdom. We spoke of how they watched what the bear ate because if a bear won’t eat it, it is poisonous.

We then spoke of Lyme today. In the end, we came back to our beautiful memories …

“Those were the good old days. Those are the memories I cherish.”
