Staying Cozy at Home This Winter

Our Hour Zoom – February 2021

While the snow fell gently outside our windows, we shared ideas and inspiration about being cozy in winter. To remind us of our conversation with so many lovely thoughts, we’re sharing some notes. Perhaps those who missed this gathering will enjoy them too!

We shared some wonderful poems about winter:

  • “Winter Morning Poem”, by Ogden Nash
Winter is the king of showmen,
Turning tree stumps into snow men
    And houses into birthday cakes
    And spreading sugar over lakes.
Smooth and clean and frosty white,
The world looks good enough to bite.
That’s the season to be young,
    Catching snowflakes on your tongue!
Snow is snowy when it’s snowing.
    I’m sorry it’s slushy when it’s going.
  • Seven Lovely Short Winter Poems, by Garden Collage, including poems by Edith Sitwell, Lewis Carroll, Candace Bushnell, and Mary Oliver.

We explored the idea of Hygge, a feeling of comfortable coziness that fosters well-being and contentment. It is a feeling of being safe, comfortable, seen, cozy, grateful and connected. It is appreciating the simple things in life and being present to those around you.

We shared with each other ways that we feel cozy at home.

  • Making and then wearing the jewelry we have made
  • Watching a Sitcom Show each week that now feels like family
  • Zooming opportunities to meet with others
  • Putting on slippers or cozy socks
  • Lighting a candle or fire
  • Bring the outdoors in
  • Keeping gratitude journal
  • Taking a warm bath
  • Cooking and eating warm food
  • Wrapping in a warm blanket
  • Appreciating what we have
  • Enjoying the company of a loved pet
  • Reading Books
  • Staying present
  • Taking a walk
  • Drinking a warm cup of tea with a treat every afternoon
  • Wearing comfortable clothes
  • Watching “Chateau Diaries”
  • Making what you have fun: games, puzzles, cards
  • Connecting with others

Please remember you are invited to our Galentine’s Day celebration this Saturday, February 13 at 7:00.

Thank you for joining us, Our Hour Friends! Here’s the short and sweet Edith Sitwell poem, I shared at the end of our gathering:

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.”

Everyone is welcome to join us on the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30-11:30 for Our Hour.
