True West is a poignant and darkly funny drama about the fierce sibling rivalry between AUSTIN, an Ivy League-educated screenwriter on the verge of success and his wayward brother, LEE, a petty thief who claims to spend much of his time living in the Mojave desert. As the brothers house-sit for their mother, they come into increasing conflict over the sale of a screenplay. LEE decides to pitch his own idea for a movie and convinces a producer, SAUL, to ditch AUSTIN love story for LEE’s own trashy Western tale. The mistrust and jealousy between them bubbles to the surface and eventually boils over. New York Times Theatre Critic Ben Brantley wrote that True West is “a great American play, arguably Mr. Shepard’s finest.” The National Review calls the play a “postmodern masterpiece.” Sam Shepard died last July.
