CCL Weekly Update – 10/28/2021
Trick or Treat …
As the leaves fall and the days shorten, Halloween draws near. Halloween, my favorite holiday, brings fond memories. Haunted houses, trick or treating, time with friends and family, classic Halloween movies, and of course trips to Salem! (Yes, I am a true New Englander, despite always being cold.) While Sunday draws near, I would ask you to consider how you can help make this Halloween spooktacular for your friends, family, and neighbors. Perhaps a few tricks, and hopefully many treats! It’s been a long, stress- filled 20 months for everyone, making finding fun and safe ways to celebrate even more essential. We’re all ready for a sense of normalcy, if you consider dressing like an evil clown or zombie “normal”, anyway.
People choose to engage with Halloween in many ways, or not at all, both which are okay! If you do choose to go trick-or-treating please be safe – wear bright clothing, use all the glow sticks (safe + fun = a win!), go in groups – and of course have fun! Especially if you live around the Common, you have the opportunity to be extra-generous, and give directly to more people than you might, even at the biggest Thanksgiving table. After all, who doesn’t love seeing a T-rex, a princess and Batman all in one night?
Please keep that sense of childlike wonder on Halloween, and always.
Warmest regards and gratitude from your Halloween loving friend,
Shelby

It’s time for a flu shot
It’s expected to be a particularly bad flu year, so it’s very important to get your shot. Remember that Covid mitigation practices (hand washing, distancing, and masking) help stop the spread of the flu virus, as well.
Flu shots are being offered throughout the Upper Valley. The Public Health Council of the Upper Valley offers updated details about flu shot types, locations, and times here. The next free flu vaccine clinic is: Friday, October 29 from 4 to 7 pm at the Mascoma Community Health Center, 18 Roberts Road, Canaan, NH. The clinic is walk-in, no reservation required, and free. Please visit their website (above) for more information on vaccine guidance.
Read more from the CDC on Flu Vaccines here.
Covid Update
Last week, the CDC issued updated booster recommendations. Following is a high-level summary. Always check with your doctor if you have questions about what’s best for you. For Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, at least 6 months after completing 2 doses, some people should receive a booster: age 65+, 50+ with underlying medical conditions, or 18+ living in long-term care settings. People 18+ may receive a booster, if they have underlying medical conditions or are at increased risk for Covid-19 exposure because of occupational or institutional setting. For J&J/Janssen vaccine, at least two months after receiving the single dose, people 18+ should receive a booster. In most cases, people may choose a booster of a different vaccine than their primary series. Click here to search for vaccination locations and make an appointment.
After a special FDA panel recommendation, the Pfizer vaccine is likely to be approved for use in 5-11 year olds any day now. Be on the lookout for more details.

Weekly health and well-being tips, resources, and recipes …
Monday’s Menu. This week’s Monday’s Menu is Shelby’s Simple & Sweet Smoothie. Shelby shared, “as someone who doesn’t love to cook, I often default to things that are quick and painless to make in the kitchen. Simple, sweet and with limited ingredients this smoothie is great for breakfast, lunch or as a sweet treat!”
We would LOVE to learn your favorite recipe(s). Please send your recipes to shelby@cclyme.org

Extending our Warm Lyme Welcome
You may be aware of the energy and excitement building, and you may have already offered to be a part, as Lyme and the whole region prepare to welcome displaced Afghan families and to strengthen our community of support for everyone who lives here. CommunityCare of Lyme is helping to coordinate this effort, in partnership with KJ Dell’Antonia, Kate Semple Barta, Bill Ploog, and a growing team in Lyme, and in collaboration with organizations and individuals at Dartmouth, Hanover High School, and across the Upper Valley.
New Hampshire has committed to welcoming at least 100 Afghans, a complicated and evolving process. In cooperation with Ascentria Care Alliance in Concord, we are creating the Lyme/Upper Valley Neighborhood Support Team, helping to build a sustainable, community-based model for resettlement that allows us to share the abundance of the Upper Valley. There will be lots more to come. If you would like to help, especially if you’d like to be part of the coordinating team, please contact KJ (kjda@hey.com) or Martha (martha.tecca@gmail.com, 603-795-0603).
We are here. Every day. 603-795-0603 or help@cclyme.org.
Reach out when you or someone you care about needs a hand. If you could use information, help, a listening ear or ways to bring someone else joy, contact us at 603-795-0603 or help@CCLyme.org. Our phone is answered every day, usually in person. Our welcoming living room in the Lyme Center Academy is a terrific place to relax, read, visit with friends, or meet with a CCL team member. It is now open often during the week and by appointment. Give us a call to confirm times. Be in touch, any time. You’ll reach a friendly voice, a little (or a lot of) help, and creative, safe ways to be involved.
