Adopting an Adventure Buddy – Wellness Wednesday

By |

Adopting an Adventure Buddy Shelby Wood “Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” – Karen Davison Similar to the starfish parable, animal rescue work can feel daunting. There are so many animals in need, knowing where to begin seems impossible at times. This quote from Karen Davison is a reminder that while rescuing one animal may "not change the world", for the animal you rescue it matters and drastically changes their future. My two dogs, Zadie and Scooby Doo (lovingly called Nana and Boo) are both rescues. When I lived in Pennsylvania I spent a few years volunteering at an animal rescue that helped place dogs, cats, and even livestock. All of the dogs that came through this rescue were pulled from high-kill shelters in southern states. When Boo was adopted he was about a year and a half old, and Nana was about 8 months. Considering they had been placed in high-kill shelters is upsetting to even think of. If you have a chance to meet them, I'm sure you'll think the same. Yes, Boo has his quirks, like his love of munching on a good bra strap. Yet, he is incredibly smart, athletic and loves a good cuddle. Nana is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. She's my shadow [...]

Casino: Cuban Social Dancing – Wellness Wednesday

By |

Casino: Cuban Social Dancing Submitted by Warren Kadoya, dance instructor Note from the CommunityCare of Lyme Team: Cuban Dancing is a way to be well! And it's just one of the wellness practices you can experience through a demonstration mini-lesson at the Lyme Health & Wellness Fair on September 30th 10am-1pm on the Lyme Common. Join us! Casino is a social dance that originated in Cuba in the 1950s. The main dances that influenced casino were son, chachachá, and danzón. Its name comes from the ballrooms where the dance developed, which were also known as “casinos.” Casino is a partner dance between two people: a “lead” and a “follow.” The lead initiates the steps and guides the follow, while the follow interprets the subtle physical and visual signals from the lead and moves accordingly, resulting in a smoothly coordinated dance. The dancers step along with the music, which is generally in 8-count phrases, on the 1, 2, 3, and 5, 6, 7. Counts 4 and 8 are used as transition steps and to shift one’s weight. Most casino moves are variations and/or combinations of a few fundamental motions, and leads can create their own moves within this framework. In addition, casino is a circular dance that involves stepping forward in most cases. This is a Cuban social dance event in Tucson, AZ, including some casino dancing Casino can [...]

Thai Meal Fundraiser 2023 – Thank You!

By |

Paphanh's 2023 Thai Meal Fundraiser WHAT AN EVENING! by Shelby Wood, CommunityCare of Lyme Manager of Volunteer Participation It makes me so happy to do this, because everyone here looks like my family. – Paphanh Sithavady, 43-year Lyme resident who came to the area as a refugee from Laos. Paphanh is a force of nature ... and one that we couldn't be more grateful for. Over the decades she has been here, through her culinary skills, planning, tenacity, and unimaginably hard work. She and her family have helped raise over $200,000 to support Lyme and nearby communities and about the same amount to build and support a school in her home town in Laos. On the beautiful evening of September 9th, Paphanh and a team of more than 50 volunteers served just over 200 people from 16 different communities across the Upper Valley. It was an enthusiastic and warm outpouring of teamwork and community involvement. Saturday's forecast was questionable all week. There was a lot of contingency planning about how to serve everyone – but never a question about whether the show would go on. Paphanh was determined. And Mother Nature got her act together! Bright and early, a team of volunteers arrived to peel, chop, roll, prep and cook over a dozen dishes (thanks to Paphanh's own hours of preparation over the preceding days). Later in [...]

Mindful Movement – Wellness Wednesday

By |

"Getting Started with Mindful Movement" From resource: Mindful.org There are many organizations that support individuals and communities either at a local or national level. Once per month, for Wellness Wednesday, we will share one of these well-respected organizations in order to connect you with more resources that support Health & Wellness. If, like me, you find yourself losing motivation to exercise, mindful movement might be a helpful way to reconnect to the joy of movement through a shift in intention and focus. The introduction from the mindful.org resource introduces the following: Riding a bike, lifting weights, sweating it out on a treadmill—each can be a mindfulness practice. Whatever the physical activity, instead of simply working out to master a skill or improve your condition, you can move and breathe in a way that shifts you from feeling busy and distracted to feeling strong and capable. - Mindful.org (Feb. 7, 2023). As a resource and introduction to mindful movement, this site offers a lot of wonderful content to help orient you to the practice. From understanding what mindful movement is, to why and how to practice,  this site provides a useful overview and video examples to help you get started. Enjoy the mindful movement resource from mindful.org HERE Staff, Mindful. “Getting Started with Mindful Movement.” Mindful, 7 Feb. 2023, www.mindful.org/getting-started-with-mindful-movement/.
