Season of Giving – Wellness Wednesday

By |

The Season of Giving – a Boost for Community Wellbeing by the CommunityCare of Lyme Team There are many ways to be involved in community this Season of Giving, lifting your own spirits and others at the same time. Many Lyme organizations have collaborated to share a broad spectrum of events and activities, where everyone is welcome. Community knows no borders. Gather for gentle, small conversations or larger, festive celebrations; enjoy shopping and support local organizations by purchasing art, beautiful trees, books, cookies, and meals to go; participate in the 75th Lyme Christmas Pageant; listen to music; support students by watching a movie or cheering at a basketball tournament. After reading that long (if incomplete) list, perhaps you'll be comforted to know there's an expert-led community conversation about managing life's challenges during the holidays. Be sure to check Lyme mailboxes for the Lyme Holiday Events Calendar. It's a lot packed into one page, to keep at your fingertips. Further details of listed events are in the Community Events Calendar online, and every listed event is open to all. Many more local and regional events are included in the online calendar. As always, if you need a ride or a little financial help to attend any gathering or event, please contact CommunityCare of Lyme. Call 603-795-0603 or email help@cclyme.org. If you would like to help make events happen, be sure [...]

Monday’s Menu: Vegan soup for cold and cough

Vegan soup for cold and cough From Roberto of naturalgoodness.blog (Aug. 6, 2020) If, like me, you've been struggling with a seasonal cold and are seeking to treat yourself to a bit of food as love, this recipe may be of interest. Of course, as blogger for Naturalgoodness.blog states: First things first… I really like this soup to help with my immune system and just because the ingredients are great for your help, but please, please consult with a doctor if you feel bad. This soup by no means is a magic potion or a replacement of a visit to a proper doctor! (Robert, Aug. 6, 2020) If you still are interested in putting together a soup that has immunity boosting ingredients you may enjoy giving this recipe a try! See the recipe from Roberto (Aug. 6, 2020) here. Poem – Halloween Apparition by Alessandra Foster

By |

Timely Poems, Selected by Stephanie Carney Halloween Apparition by Alessandra Foster -with enormous admiration for Edgar Allan. Poe’s 18-verse, “The Raven” Once upon a midnight eerie while I watched TV ‘til bleary, Mysteries and forgotten lore with haunted tales from days of yore. While I nodded, buzzing, sawing, came a scratching and a clawing As my dog was leaping, lunging, jawing at my backyard door. Not the usual rabbit, I muttered, gnawing by my patio door, No, this must be something more. Halloween can be quite scary so I soon became quite wary: How’d my dog, adored and dear, become a feral beast to fear? Why’d my sweet chihuahua-terrier change herself to something scarier? Whence this need at frantic speed to try to break a windowed door? Peered into the October night fearing a sight I might abhor— Moon and shadows, nothing more. Grabbed my dog to help her calm, hoping hands provided balm. Restraint ignored, with barks galore, she hurled herself up from the floor. Then I saw it, ghostly white, standing out against the night, Creeping up three steps, a fright, right up to the windowed door. Slow and slower was its pace to press its face against the door. My frenzied dog could take no more. She placed her face against the glass exactly where the white face was. Nervously I laughed, ‘twas plain, the [...]

E-bikes, Scooters Li-ion Battery Fire Safety – Wellness Wednesday

By |

E-bikes, Scooters and Other Lithium Ion Battery Devices Fire Safety Shared to the Lyme Listserv by Aaron Rich (Oct 20, 2023) We are frequently notified in the fire service of the continued challenges that exist with moving forward towards a more digital and electronically assisted society and lifestyle. This has resulted in an increase in fires and life safety challenges for Fire Departments. In Lyme we have had a property experience SIGNIFICANT damage due to the explosion of a lithium ion battery while charging. In other areas with more concentrated housing E-bikes and scooters are no longer allowed inside the buildings to reduce the potential of major fires and/or loss of life.  A quick google of "ebike explodes" this AM found numerous articles from just the last week of national fires, some resulting in a loss of life.  The growth of these fires once they begin is absolutely staggering, it's extremely fast, intense and dangerous.  Please follow the recommended charging guidelines of the manufacturer, and follow these guidelines being provided by the NFPA. Due to the portability of these devices they are often stored and charged inside a house, sometimes even in bedrooms which increases the risk of life safety concerns.  I've often seen devices charged in bedrooms(scooters, bikes, etc), the comfort of having these items in our lives has in my opinion outpaced some of the safety concerns. From the NFPA: "The New [...]

Poem – Map by Linda Hogan

By |

Timely Poems, Selected by Stephanie Carney Map  by Linda Hogan This is the world so vast and lonely without end, with mountains named for men who brought hunger from other lands, and fear of the thick, dark forest of trees that held each other up, knowing fire dreamed of swallowing them and spoke an older tongue, and the tongue of the nation of wolves was the wind around them. Even ice was not silent. It cried its broken self back to warmth. But they called it ice, wolf, forest of sticks, as if words would make it something they could hold in gloved hands, open, plot a way and follow. This is the map of the forsaken world. This is the world without end where forests have been cut away from their trees. These are the lines wolf could not pass over. This is what I know from science: that a grain of dust dwells at the center of every flake of snow, that ice can have its way with land, that wolves live inside a circle of their own beginning. This is what I know from blood: the first language is not our own. There are names each thing has for itself, and beneath us the other order already moves. It is burning. It is dreaming. It is waking up.
